AS AN ADOPTED CHILD, BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE YOUR PLACE – Romans 11:11–24
AS AN ADOPTED CHILD, BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE YOUR PLACE
Text: Book of Romans 11:11–24
INTRODUCTION
Adoption is an act of grace. No one adopts a child because the child earned it; adoption flows from love, mercy, and choice. In the same way, our salvation is not a reward for works, but a gift of God’s grace.
In Romans 11, Apostle Paul uses a powerful illustration—the olive tree—to warn believers that although we are adopted into God’s family, we must not become careless, proud, or spiritually lazy. Adoption gives us access, but remaining requires faith, humility, and obedience.
This message is a sober reminder:
👉 Grace brought you in, but carelessness can cost you your place.
SCRIPTURAL BACKGROUND (Romans 11:11–24)
Paul explains that:
-
Israel, God’s natural branches, stumbled because of unbelief.
-
Gentiles were grafted in by faith—not by merit.
-
The same God who cut off natural branches can remove grafted ones if they fall into unbelief.
Key Warning (Romans 11:20):
“Be not high-minded, but fear.”
KEY TRUTHS FROM THE TEXT
1. Adoption Is by Grace, Not by Effort
You were not grafted in because you were better, stronger, or more righteous.
You were brought in because of God’s mercy.
-
Grace saves us.
-
Grace positions us.
-
Grace sustains us.
But grace is not a license for carelessness.
📖 Ephesians 2:8–9 — “By grace are ye saved through faith…”
2. Adoption Does Not Cancel Responsibility
Being adopted into God’s family does not remove accountability.
Paul warns the Gentile believers:
“If God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest He also spare not thee.”
Salvation is free, but discipleship is costly.
Position without obedience leads to downfall.
3. Pride Is the Fastest Way to Lose Your Place
Spiritual pride is dangerous.
-
Pride says: “I am chosen, nothing can happen.”
-
Pride forgets the source of grace.
-
Pride replaces reverence with arrogance.
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
📖 Proverbs 16:18 — “Pride goeth before destruction…”
4. Faith Is What Keeps You Grafted In
Paul makes it clear:
“Thou standest by faith.”
Not by church title.
Not by years in ministry.
Not by spiritual gifts.
Only living, obedient faith keeps a believer connected to the root.
5. Disconnection Is Possible Through Unbelief
This passage destroys the lie of careless Christianity.
Unbelief can:
-
Disconnect prayer life
-
Dry up spiritual sensitivity
-
Lead to compromise
-
Eventually cause separation
God is loving, but He is also holy.
PRACTICAL LIFE APPLICATIONS
1. Examine Your Walk Daily
Ask yourself:
-
Am I still walking in faith?
-
Am I obeying God’s Word?
-
Is my heart still tender toward God?
📖 2 Corinthians 13:5 — “Examine yourselves…”
2. Stay Rooted in the Word
Branches survive only when connected to the root.
Neglecting the Word leads to spiritual dryness.
The Word keeps you:
-
Humble
-
Grounded
-
Aligned with God’s will
3. Guard Against Spiritual Pride
Never think:
-
“I cannot fall”
-
“God must keep me no matter what”
-
“Others may fail, but not me”
Fear God—not in terror, but in reverent obedience.
4. Persevere in Faith and Holiness
Adoption is not the finish line—it is the beginning.
Continue in:
-
Faith
-
Holiness
-
Obedience
-
Love for God
📖 Hebrews 12:14 — “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.”
5. Depend on Grace, Not Assumption
Grace must be:
-
Received
-
Walked in
-
Sustained by faith
Never assume grace will cover rebellion.
CONCLUSION
Beloved, adoption is a privilege—but remaining is a responsibility.
You are grafted in:
-
Stay humble.
-
Stay faithful.
-
Stay obedient.
-
Stay connected.
May we never be adopted children who lose our place through pride, unbelief, or carelessness.
FINAL PRAYER
Father, we thank You for the grace of adoption.
Keep us humble, rooted, and steadfast in faith.
Deliver us from pride, unbelief, and spiritual carelessness.
By Your mercy, let us remain firmly grafted in Christ,
Bearing fruit unto eternal life.
In Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen.
